At Amore and Rose, we delve into the enchantment of love and tradition as we explore the incredible story behind Valentine’s Day.

We will take you through the centuries, from mysterious origins to the modern celebration of love, also telling you how floral arrangements pay tribute to this eternal romance.

The brave roman priest

The story of Valentine’s Day dates back to the Roman Empire, where a brave priest, named Valentine, is believed to have defied the restrictions of Emperor Claudius II by secretly marrying couples.

The emperor enacted a law prohibiting marriage for young men so that they could join the army. It was there that the priest decided to break down barriers so that young lovers could celebrate their marriage.

His bravery in the name of love made him a symbol of romance and devotion, as he was sentenced to death for this “crime,” being stoned and beheaded specifically on February 14 of that time.

In the Middle Ages, the celebration of Valentine’s Day became associated with love and the beginning of the bird mating season. This period marked the blossoming of romantic feelings and led to the exchange of letters and messages of love.

The rise of romantic expressions

During the 17th century, the tradition of expressing romantic feelings became more symbolic and codified. Flowers, especially red roses, became symbols of love and devotion.

Some curious facts about this special date

The first known Valentine’s card was sent in the 15th century. It was the Duke of Orleans, a prisoner in the Tower of London, who sent a love letter to his wife.

In 1984, Valentine’s Day was especially highlighted when astronaut Bruce McCandless performed the first spacewalk not tethered to the spacecraft. His phrase “Happy Valentine’s Day!” became a historic moment.

Valentine’s Day is not exclusive to the West. In Japan, women traditionally give chocolates to men on February 14, and on March 14, known as “White Day,” men return the gesture by giving white sweets.
